Task
As part of the UX Design Studio unit, I was challenged to create a digital service-based solution for the circular economy. I chose to focus on resource sharing and reuse within the surfing community, addressing the pain points of traveling surfers who struggle with access to quality boards, expensive rentals, and lack of local connections.
The Solution
Wavelength is a peer-to-peer surf app that allows users to rent, share, or buy boards from locals at their destination. Beyond equipment access, it fosters community and sustainability by encouraging reuse, reducing waste, and making surfing more accessible and circular.
The Process
I followed the Double Diamond UX approach:
Discover → User interviews and surveys with surfers highlighted frustrations with poor rental options and the difficulty of finding equipment through scattered, hard-to-navigate platforms.
Define → Mapped user journeys and developed personas, such as the travelling backpacker.
Develop → Ideated features like rentals, “ find the right board for you”, and community meetups. Built wireframes and flows in Figma.
Deliver → Designed a clickable prototype and conducted usability testing, making a few refinements based on feedback. 100% of participants said they would use the app when travelling.
Outcome
The final prototype demonstrated how Wavelength could reduce waste and promote sharing by extending the life cycle of surfboards. By combining circular economy principles with user-centered design, the project reimagines how surfers travel, connect, and share resources worldwide.
